The Editor, Sir:
I am delighted to receive responses to my published letter of September 18, which highlighted a lack of adequate recycling options available to households in Jamaica. It was brought to my attention that the Jamaica Environment Trust/Earth House does offer some opportunities which I will now outline.
Earth House will accept glass bottles, plastic bottles, and newspaper bundles for recycling. They are located at 11 Waterloo Road, Kingston 10, and they can be contacted at 960-3693 or 960-9783. Collection hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Note that they only take No. 1, 2 and 5 plastic bottles, which covers most of the consumer disposable plastic bottles, such as products by Catherine's Peak, WATA, etc.
To find out if your bottles would be accepted, just look at the bottom of the bottle for the code which consists of three arrows that go clockwise and create a triangle with rounded corners. Inside the triangle is a number that identifies the type of plastic. Simply put, if the number 1, 2 or 5, is within the triangle, Earth House will accept that item for recycling.
As Jamaicans interested in our environment, let us use this opportunity to recycle our bottles and newspapers. Instead of tossing them into the general garbage to be carted to public dump sites, let us give them over to the recycling programme at Earth House, run by the Jamaica Environment Trust.
I am, etc.,
C. JOHN PRYCE
