Kingston streets need repairing
published: Monday | November 5, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

Most of the streets in Kingston were in a bad state prior to the assault of Hurricane Dean. Now, they are in a deplorable condition. It seems to me that the previous administration focused too much on patch work in dealing with the repair of Kingston's streets. What is necessary are roads of the standard of Highway 2000.

For too long, citizens of this country have had to contend with potholes and uneven road surfaces. Roads are perhaps the most essential part of a country's infrastructural development because without them, the education, health and industrial sectors would all come to a screeching halt. Therefore, priority has to be given to roads in this new millennium.

The Patterson and Simpson Miller-led administrations placed too much focus on road development at the macro level and virtually ignored road development at the micro level. Any government that is serious about economic development must make it a priority to resurface, on a phased basis, every single street in Kingston that is in a deplorable state. Anything short of that would be inadequate.

I am, etc.,
