The Editor, Sir:While I do not question the veracity of those who have expressed concern over the inclusion of a family unit in our educational system, I do, however, question their sincerity about the future of our country. It is easier to follow than to lead and, instead of leading dialogue over issues that are of greater socio-economical concern, our moral guardians choose to follow a long-standing intolerance that we have as a people. We do not, as a collective, approve of homosexuality, the issue is moot. I doubt seriously that a mention in a text is going to change that.
Let us refocus on real pressing social issues, I doubt Jamaica is under any threat of a conspiracy among homosexuals to destroy the family unit as we know it. What threatens our nation is crime and governments, past and present, seeming inability to address it. We are threatened by the lack of sustainable opportunities for our young men and women.
We are threatened by the epidemic of HIV/AIDS among our young. Jamaica is under siege, not from the threat of increased homosexual families, but from corrupt public officials. We should be more concerned about the politics of isolation that permeates our economic, social and political systems.
Enough of this pointless banter, let us now renew debate about solutions to our more demanding problems. One Love.
I am, etc.,
