Fight for a moral society
published: Thursday | November 22, 2007

The Editor, sir:

In regard to lewd music and low morals I appreciate the response of Mr. Ferguson (dated Nov. 15, 2007). However, I believe that if it is not dead, it can be restored.

I believe that lying deep within us is the will power inherited from our forefathers who fought relentlessly for our freedom from slavery. We must muster the will to fight for a moral society.

A new kind of fight needs to be executed against the immorality of our society. It must never be made to look like it is okay or it is bad but we cannot do anything about it. I believe something can be done to instill values and respect in our youngsters. Parents, it starts with you. Fathers need to play a more pivotal role in the lives of their children, help them establish values, and aspiration to be dignified professionals wherever they are called upon for service.

Rising above the odds

Let us rally the forces of the motivational speakers in our society. Form a group; come into the schools and other public places. Seek to impact lives with challenges that can uplift them. Ask companies to sponsor motivational books and personal stories that show how depraved individuals right across Jamaica rose above the odds and are doing well. Distribute them as reading tools that will aid the positive driving force lying dormant in us. Bring into the schools Garveyism, reinforce the fact that we are black and beautiful, marvelously created in the image of God for his glory. It may just be that we can save a few.

I am, etc.,

SOPHIA GRIFFITHS
