Former first lady says state vehicle reclaimed
published: Friday | November 30, 2007

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

Former First Lady Var-shnie Singh on Wednesday complained that a state-owned vehicle she used to facilitate work for her charitable organisation has been withdrawn seven months after she and President Bharrat Jagdeo jointly announced a matrimonial split.

Ms. Singh told a media conference that she returned to Guyana from an overseas trip last week only to find that she could not access the government vehicle she had been using to do work for her charitable organisation, Kids First Fund, prior to the trip.

"I am calling on any member of the public who has a spare vehicle to lend me to do my work," Singh appealed tearfully, adding "I don't know you have to be married in this country to get assistance".

No support

The volunteer worker com-plained that the administration was no longer supportive of her work, as she was previously assisted financially by the Ministry of Health to secure surgeries overseas for underprivileged children, but since parting with the president, there has not been much help.

She said the reclaimed vehicle has been seen transporting a child to school every day, but she has been unable to get a response from the state on the matter.

The former first lady said since the vehicle was reclaimed, she has been forced to commute in public transportation and taxis.

Both Jagdeo and Singh had issued a joint statement back in April declaring that they had decided to end their eight-year union after growing apart from each other.

"It is an amicable parting and we feel this is the best course for us as we both wish to find happiness and have families of our own in the future," they explained in a joint statement released by the Office of the President.
