What about the parents?
I have observed that many responsibilities are being passed to the teachers of our public education system and I would really like to know what ever happened to the parents? Teachers are parents too and with all these other responsibilities passed on to these teachers what will become of their offspring?
Parents need to be reminded that a teacher's chief responsibility is to educate, not baby-sit or be a substitute parent. Teachers are playing far too many roles for which they are not appreciated - financier (lunch money, concert ticket money, etc) , security guard, investigator, forensic specialist, counsellor, surrogate parent, educator, etc. It is high time for parents to stop passing on their responsibilities to others.

Portland needs help
In your paper of November 29, the Member of Parliament for East Portland expressed the view that the PNP will reclaim Portland because the people are dissatisfied with the JLP. Does Mr. Rhodd know that it's the PNP that has been governing the parish for more than 20 years and has done nothing for that beautiful place? As a matter of fact, it is under the regime of the PNP that the parish has waned almost into oblivion. Before the PNP took power, the economy of the parish was good, with tourism and bananas leading the financial growth. Cruise ships were regular on a weekly basis.
Today, Portland is not sold as a destination on the travel menu. The people of Portland need to look at where they are coming from and where they are today, and figure where has the "leadership" gone. I ask Portlanders, in whose hands will you now place your future?

The stigma of AIDS
I am a regular reader of The Gleaner and my heart was saddened when I discovered the kind of discrimination people with AIDS face in Jamaica. This is due to the fact that many people will be exposed to this horrible disease from having unprotected sex, blood transfusions, etc.
My concern is for the innocent women and men who don't know their partners may be cheating and are exposed to this disease.
The children are innocent and need to be treated with love and care. People need to know the facts about AIDS. I just hope people who are pointing their fingers and stigmatising others who are HIV positive know their status.
