Danger on the toll road
published: Tuesday | December 4, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

On Friday night (November 30), I saw the corpse or fragments thereof of a man who was attempting to cross the Portmore leg of the toll road. It is clear that this pedestrian was wrong as it relates to the toll road legislation where it specifically states that no pedestrians or pedal cyclists should use this road.

In fact, upon entering the road there are signs/symbols indicating who should use this road. This is for obvious reasons, coming at 70 miles per hour in a three-lane road, there is no way any motorist, especially at 7:00 p.m., would be able to see such a pedestrian.

Dangerous crossing

On December 3, at 8:00 a.m., on my way to work via the Portmore toll, I saw a little girl no more than eight years old attempting to cross the same road to go to the fishing village where people live.

The authorities need to be more vigilant, especially during the Christmas season. I suggest that these roads are manned regularly and persons prosecuted for violating the toll road legislation. The parents of children seen crossing the road should also be charged and the child seen as one in need of care and protection pursuant to the Child Care and Protection Act.

I am, etc.,

Luciana Ramsay
