VOXPOP - Top cop in line of fire
published: Tuesday | December 4, 2007

Many Jamaicans have an opinion on retired JDF chief of staff Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin who is to assume duties as the next commissioner of police. Today we share reactions from the public.

Doran Witter

He (Lewin) is a very experienced person when it comes to security matters in the country, and so I think it is a good choice. I think that we could use somebody from outside of the (Jamaica Constabulary) Force because somebody from outside would have fresh ideas ... and he being from the army, I think that he will have fresh ideas.

Renée Shorter

It is kind of a good idea based on the fact that he is associated with the (Jamaica Defence) Force. Maybe he can give outside views on how to run the police force.

Barbara Grant

I think it is a fantastic move. We need somebody like that. I think an army person has the discipline, the know-how, he is outside of the police force. The corruption of the police force is too high at all levels and, with him coming from the army, I think we are going to see results.

Jennifer Thompson

I think he will do a good job. He might get opposition now but later on they will realise that he is a good choice and will come on his side in the end.

Garth Watson

I think it is a positive move because of his army background and the amount of crime in the country at this time. I think we need some stringent measures, which I think he, as an army man, would possibly be best suited to provide.

Shaneil Smith

I don't see it as a smart decision, considering his track record at the JDF. And now coming into the JCF, I don't see it as a wise decision.
