New book on slave trade to be launched
published: Tuesday | December 4, 2007

Dunn

A new book, entitled Emancipation, the Lessons and the Legacy, is to be launched this week as part of Jamaica's observance, this year, of the bicentenary of the British trade in enslaved Africans.

The book, edited by Dr. Hopeton Dunn, is designed as a special commemorative volume for persons interested in Jamaican and Caribbean social history. The launch of the book will take place on Thursday, December 6, at 5:30 p.m. on the Webster Memorial United Church grounds, 53 Half-Way Tree Road, St. Andrew. Members of the public are invited to attend.

Guest speaker for the launch will be Professor Maureen Warner-Lewis, author and Professor Emeritus, Department of Literatures in English, University of the West Indies Mona.

Emancipation lectures

Appearing as it does in the bicentenary year of the abolition of the British slave trade, the book stands as a sterling contribution towards a deeper understanding of the events before and after 1807. It brings together in an attractive form, 13 public lectures presented in the annual Emancipation Lecture Series between 1994 and 2006.

The book contains chapters from outstanding Jamaican historians and scholars, including Professor Rex Nettleford, Dr. Erna Brodber, Rev. Dr. Horace Russell, Professor Errol Miller, Dr. Olive Lewin, Prof. Barrington Chevannes, Prof. Rupert Lewis, Prof. Verene Shepherd, Rev. Dr Gordon Cowans, Dr. Veront Satchell, Rev. Dr. Dave St. A. Gosse, Dr. Glenda Simms, and Ms. Alison Anderson.
