Policeman on manslaughter charge to face murder trial instead
published: Friday | December 7, 2007

The manslaughter trial of police Constable Deon Carr was aborted on Tuesday after prosecutors took the decision that he should be indicted for murder.

Carr is to be tried on February 18 in the Home Circuit Court for the murder of Constable Halkeith Ergos, who was attached to the Hannah Town Police Station.

A seven-member jury was selected on Monday to start Carr's manslaughter trial. Justice Kay Beckford discharged the jury after the indictment was changed.

Shot another cop

It is being alleged that, on May 23, Carr fatally shot Ergos.

The allegations are that the accused and the deceased stopped a motorist in the vicinity of the Blood Bank on Slipe Pen Road, Kingston, on that day. It is further alleged that Carr began poking his gun at the motorist's chest and Ergos took Carr away from the motorist.

Carr allegedly went back to where the motorist was and the motorist allegedly told him to be careful that he (Carr) did not shoot him.

Some time after, an explosion was heard and Ergos was shot in the chest. Ergos was standing behind the motorist when he was shot.
