Abolish parish councils
published: Friday | December 7, 2007

The Editor, Sir:

In reading about the low voter turn-out for the local government elections, two ideas struck me. First, these elections should take place one year after the general elections. This would ensure that the euphoria and excitement would have greatly subsided (after the general elections) and it would likely result in a greater voter turn-out.

Second, in reading the article on the local government elections, I could not help but notice that an individual was quoted as saying he did not know who his councillor was. If the 'Balkanisation' of the parish council divisions was not so extensive perhaps more people would know who represents their division. Abolish the parish councils and replace them with county councils. Each county would be composed of approximately 25 divisions and those persons would choose a county chairperson. That cuts the number of people at the feeding trough and likely the temptation of corruption.

I am, etc;
