What should you do if ...?
published: Sunday | December 9, 2007

Demar Tracey, Outlook Youth Writer

Once again, Outlook Youth went into the streets to ask persons about what they should or should never do when they are placed in some of the most common situations

Scenario: It's easy to be robbed nowadays, so, for those of you who have never had this horrific experience, and for those who will be caught off guard again, here are a few pointers you should know.

YOU SHOULD

Comply with the orders

Paula, 20: "You don't want to act stupid in any situation that is life threatening, so just follow any instructions that they give you, it could spare your life."

Negotiate if possible

Wayne, 20: "Criminals are persons too, so even though they are the ones with the gun, if you ask kindly, they will probably leave you with a bus fare, depending on the mood they are in."

Scream

Shelly, 19: "A scream just might surprise them, especially in the day. It can force them to run. Or, even better, draw attention and some serious people will come deal with them properly." (Laughs)

Report the matter to the police

Kemar, 21: "That's very important, because you don't want to just lose your things like that, so informing the police creates a chance for you to actually get back the things you lost."

BUT, YOU SHOULD NEVER

Panic

Krystle, 21: "You may be pretty scared, but that's natural because you're human, but panicking is not the answer. That just gives the crook more control of the situation."

Resist

Michelle, 18: "The man is armed and obviously hungry so that can only spell disaster if you resist."

Underestimate their capabilities

Patrick, 22: "Him being small in body does not lessen the possibility of him doing harm to you. He can be just as dangerous as a man who is bigger in body, or even worse than such a man."

Think that your possessions are irreplaceable

Franz, 20: "Only life cannot be replaced, so if the man comes and wants your phone or car, etc., give it to him. Never stop and think about how much it cost and how rare it is; that will force you to do something stupid."
