Waterhouse make strong finish to first round
published: Tuesday | December 11, 2007

Anthony Minott, Freelance Writer

Even though Waterhouse punished August Town 3-1 in their Cash Plus Premier League match at the Waterhouse Mini Stadium in Drewsland on Sunday, their coach, Wayne Fairclough, is still not satisfied with his team's level of play.

"I think we played in spurts. Our defensive unit was slack and a bit hesitant to tackle and make the forward pass. Our linkmen were tracking but they weren't tackling and our forwards, I think they squandered many goals, therefore the scoreline could be much more," Fairclough summarised.

He was happy for the three points nonetheless. Under his guidance, Waterhouse have won two straight games and are on 16 points. Their first round points output is the same as Seba United, who were surprised 1-2 by Sporting Central , and defending champions Harbour View, who drew 1-1 with Arnett Gardens.

Only leaders, Portmore United (24), and their end-of-round final opponents, Tivoli Gardens (18), have more. August Town remain in the relegation zone on nine points, just ahead of Village United (5).

August Town's top player, Daniel Shaw, gave the visitors a seventh-minute lead. This was, however, short-lived as two minutes later, Damion Williams equalised for the home team, then, Andre Hickling gave Waterhouse a 2-1 lead in the 65th minute.

The introduction of ace striker Kevin Lamey in the 65th minute put a spunk in the Drewsland team's offence, as immediately Lamey started to leave the August Town defenders off balance and after 13 minutes on the field, he broke inside the penalty box, dismissed a defender and struck powerfully. His firm shot deflected off the goalkeeper and went into the goal.

Fairclough, who is having a second stint with the club after coaching them to championship honours in the 2005-06 season, agreed that Lamey made a difference, but insisted that he needed to get his fitness level to an acceptable standard.

"Kevin Lamey playing in any team will be a good spunk, but then again, I think that he needs to get his (physical condition) on par with the other players. But I think he's working on it."

Lamey caused quite a scare to his fans as after scoring the goal, he attempted to jump the fence to celebrate his goal, but fell awkwardly.
