Government of Jamaica moves to appoint new Public Service Commission
published: Friday | December 14, 2007

Edmond Campbell and Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporters

Nearly 24 hours after the sacking of members of the Public Service Commission (PSC) by Governor-General Sir Kenneth Hall, on the advice of Prime Minister Bruce Golding, the Government is moving swiftly to appoint new members of the commission.

Mr. Golding has indicated that he will now consult with Leader of the Opposition, Portia Simpson Miller, on the appointment of a new commission.

But this development comes even as Justice Kay Beckford yesterday granted an injunction barring the Prime Minister from recommending to the Governor-General that the members of the PSC be dismissed for misbehaviour.

A legal expert told The Gleaner yesterday that, because the Prime Minister's recommendation was acted on before the injunction was granted, the stay was of no effect, and Mr. Golding can proceed to appoint new members of the commission.

However, while the application was being made in chambers, lawyers representing Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller were unaware that the members had already been fired.

"This is stealing a march on justice," attorney-at-law Bert Samuels, one of the lawyers representing Mrs. Simpson Miller, said yesterday.
