Supporting Commish
published: Saturday | December 22, 2007

Spanish Town Citizens Against Gun Violence would like to extend a warm welcome to Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, commissioner of police, who is now at the helm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

He comes with a world of experience and we are pleased to see that, in these his first few days, he is in the process of planning to effect excellent change. This organisation stands with the commissioner and is committed to working with him at every level.

Garbage problem

I have been itching all over lately with the grim discovery that 'garbage' isn't being collected anymore. Let me hasten to explain that Mandeville is a town noted for the efficient services of the National Solid Waste Management Authority.

However, it must be noted that on the outskirts of the town, the collection of 'garbage' is a dying trend. On a weekly basis, the collector will turn up to collect only the bags in the receptacles, but the loose garbage is still piling up, ignored by those who collect.

I am itchy all over thinking that garbage (if not placed in bags, no matter how small) will not ever be collected and it will pile up leading to an epidemic.

Road bumps

Unfortunately, all-too-many Jamaican parents, teachers and school administrators have reacted by becoming the 'sleeping policemen' of their children's futures.

Despite their best efforts, they are little more than speed bumps on the road to the nation's future tragedies.
