Jamaica needs external help
published: Sunday | December 23, 2007

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Violence seems to be an endemic Jamaican problem. Visiting the island over 40 times in 52 years, it has the imprint of socioeconomic imbalance. Before leaving for Jamaica, friends asked - why Jamaica, there is too much killing going on there. Therefore, this is not only an internal matter, but a serious impediment for a more intensive tourism activity.

Your editorials and many readers offer suggestions, all well intended. But it is not a matter of plans, but of implementation. Perhaps the two major political parties should curb their activists.

Another issue and source of violence is the drug culture. The newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Lewin, can certainly help by demanding (and receiving) the absolute dedication of law enforcement organs.

However, one must not hope for miracles. Jamaica may need external help. Some United Nations special agencies may offer physical or other solutions. To mind come the Italian carabinieri units - something between army and police - strong, highly dedicated, incorruptible, specially trained, in uniform or undercover, providing a tough fighting force a cadre of security forces to provide Jamaica with a more protected citizenry.

I am, etc.,

JOSEPH GOTTFRIED
