THE EDITOR, Sir:
A current Kingfish campaign radio promo, sponsored by the European Union, tries to counter crime by having a driver (presumably of a taxi) recount the experience of being robbed at gunpoint by young teenagers. There is a similar item on local television, not, I think, mentioning the age of the assailants.
Another TV promo has the well-known Bach melody, 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' being interrupted by gunshots, as a peaceful sleeper is apparently murdered in bed.
I would be interested to know what psychological effect these promos are expected to have on the viewers - and particularly on the disillusioned adolescent and young adult discontents in our society.
Perhaps a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or a criminologist could explain what the likely effects are, to those of us who feel that they might be the direct opposite of what we would hope for.
I am, etc.,
