On the verge of anarchy
published: Wednesday | January 2, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

A few days ago, I sent an email to Dr. Rattray, one of your columnists, outlining my grave nervousness at even the thought of visiting my country on vacation, a country I love so much.

He assured me that the area I was intending to stay for one month is quite safe. I do commend him for his optimism and bravery but, unfortunately and sadly, I cannot share his enthusiasm even in the intended area I shall stay and of which we discussed via email.

The question is, can we honestly and truly state that anywhere in Jamaica is safe these days and at this time? As far as crime is concerned, the country seems to be on the verge of anarchy!

Disappointed

I am cognisant that the new Government under the Hon. Bruce Golding has just taken the helm but I, along with several others, am already disappointed with the slow approach to fixing the crime woes of Jamaica. It's almost as if everyone has given up to the lumpens! We cannot afford to present this appearance. We must act now.

We, at home and abroad, are really looking to see how the new Commissioner of Police, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin, will proceed, but we cannot sit back and await only the commissioner's miracle. Solving Jamaica's crime needs a team approach! We wish him and our Jamaican brothers and sisters luck!

I am, etc.,
