The Editor, Sir:
I wish to make a few comments regarding two articles in yesterday's edition of The Gleaner dealing with the prophetic movement in Jamaica. In one article, Bishop Morgan was reported to have said, "The movement has learnt a lot and gained a great sense of maturity in the last year," and I wondered what he meant by that.
Then I read the other article and saw that the movement had included a disclaimer this year. I found this very amusing. Who ever heard of a conditional prophecy? There is no such thing in the Bible. I have been through the Bible a few times and I have seen conditional promises but never a conditional prophecy.
A prophecy in the Old Testa-ment sense, meant that something would happen and nothing [including any act by man] could prevent it. None of the instances quoted in the disclaimer was a prophecy.
Every one of them stated or implied the 'if, then' principle. And once the word 'if' is stated or implied then the proclamation is no longer a prophecy.
Now, there has been no prophet in the foretelling sense since Jesus Christ. These people are, therefore, imposters suffering from delusions of grandeur. They don't even know what a prophecy is, yet they present themselves as prophets. The reference to 'tithes' and 'fifths' betrays their real motives.
I am, etc.,
