Opposition role essential
published: Wednesday | January 9, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I wish to commend Opposition Leader Portia Simpson Miller for agreeing to resume the Vale Royal talks with Prime Minister Bruce Golding shortly.

These high-level meetings are necessary and in the interest of Jamaica from a governance framework and much can be accomplished for the country if the Opposition Leader and Prime Minister come to a mutual agreement on specific policies for the advancement of this country.

It is imperative that this country has an effective, vocal and energetic Opposition Leader and Opposition party.

Unfortunately, the People's National Party's (PNP) Opposition Shadow Cabinet has gone silent and needs to wake up from its sleep.

It is my view that Colin Campbell did a commendable job when he was general secretary of the PNP and should be re-appointed to this senior PNP position. Mr. Campbell is an erudite and hardworking member of the PNP and has a lot more to contribute to the party.

I am, etc.,

RICHARD TOMLINSON

Montego Bay, St. James
