Performer of the week: Brown's bowling sends Leewards into tailspin

AN IMPRESSIVE display from leg-spinner Odean Brown handed Jamaica an easy opening round victory over the Leeward Islands in their Carib Beer Series match last Sunday at Sabina Park.

Brown, who picked up 5-31 in the first innings, returned 5-72 to complete match figures of 10-103, his first 10-wicket haul at this level and for this, he was duly named The Gleaner's Top Performer of the Week.

The St. Catherine Cricket Club spinner, who was well supported by left-arm spinner Nikita Miller, who ended with match figures of 7-85, was later named Man of the Match.

Resuming with the ball last Sunday, a day in which things looked as if the match was heading into Monday's fourth day, Brown had other ideas as he picked up the wicket of Leeward Islands captain Omari Banks, who edged to first slip off an explosive dive. The Leewards, who had resumed on 87 for five, slipped to 137 for eight at lunch with debutant opening batsman Moncin Hodge (64) batting patiently but when he was forced on his back foot, he could not do anything apart from hit the ball straight into the waiting hands of Brown, which signalled the end was not far away.

Like in the first innings where he ended the Leeward Islands' innings, Brown rapped things up by having Anthony Martin caught for 11.
