Cabbies honk for insurance regulator
published: Friday | January 18, 2008

The Association of Hackney Carriages is asking the Government to establish a regulatory body for the granting of insurance for taxis.

According to Willard Costley, president of the association, there is currently no regulatory agency to deal with the claims of motorists who experience difficulties securing insurance coverage or compensation.

Mr. Costley claims that some taxi drivers who are denied insurance coverage are faced with the choice of either parking their vehicles or operating illegally.

He is, therefore, appealing to Transport Minister Mike Henry to remedy the situation by appointing a regulatory body before the next road-licensing session, which is scheduled to begin on April 1.
