Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) calls for businesses and unions to cooperate
published: Friday | January 18, 2008

The Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) has called for greater synergy between business enterprises and local trade unions in order to facilitate more constructive interaction.

In light of the recent strike by Jamaica Urban Transit Company workers, JEF has encouraged both employers and trade union officials to make a concerted effort to change the nature of their relationship.

Misconception

According to a release yesterday, JEF said it believes there is "a common misconception on the part of trade unions to view businesses as the adversary, when they are in fact an important ally".

"Often viewed as the obstacle to desirable working conditions, unions need to recognise that it is not in the interest of an employer to create a hostile and unhealthy environment, as it directly impacts a company's productivity," the release read.
