WESTERN BUREAU:
SEBA UNITED'S six-game free fall in the standings of the Cash Plus Premier League ended at Jarrett Park on Wednesday night when they defeated August Town 2-0 in the final 78 minutes of their game, which was cut short by an islandwide power cut last week.
In a game they dominated and could have won by a much wider margin had it not been for a spate of missed chances, the Theodore Whitmore-coached Seba United got their goals through Delroy Ellis, who scored in the first half; and substitute Wilfred Smith, who sealed the issue late in the game.
"After Sunday's 4-2 loss to Harbour View, we had a heart-to-heart talk with the team and they promised to dig deeper in a bid to get better results," said Whitmore. "Today we saw some of the commitment that was missing in some of our recent games so our aim is that this is a sign of things to come."
August town slipping
By virtue of their win, Seba United, who are now on 22 points, have jumped from eighth to sixth in the 12-team competition. August Town's defeat has resulted in them slipping from 10th to 11th with only Village United standing between them and rock bottom.
Seba United, who settled quickly and looked the better team in the early going, with schoolboy Edward Campbell and Delroy Ellis working well in tandem, missed a few early opportunities before finally hitting the target in the 35th minute with a well-taken goal.
Campbell knocked a left-side corner kick into the path of Norman Foster, who cracked a powerful low cross in front of the goal. The alert Ellis sent his glancing header out of the reach of goalkeeper Devon Haughton and into the roof of the net, making the score 1-0.
Towards the end of the half, Seba got and wasted two further chances - in the 37th minute when Stephen Irving struck the crossbar with his 25-yard freekick, and in the 44th minute when Campbell fired straight at the goalkeeper from close range.
Blunders
In the second half, August Town came out hell-bent on finding an equaliser but blunders in the 58th minute by Ziecko Herrerra, who had his advance checked by goalkeeper Neil Lynch; and Daniel Shaw, whose close-range shot in the 62nd minute struck the upright, kept them off the scoresheet.
Seba regained the ascendancy midway through the half and missed a 'sitter' in the 69th minute when the wily Campbell crossed perfectly to Ellis inside the goal area but his side-footed effort sailed inches over the crossbar, much to the disbelief of his teammates.
With time running out, Seba brought on substitutes Kevon Grant and Smith and the move paid rich dividends in the 75th minute when a move started by Grant saw Kemar James slicing a neat pass to the alert Smith before the goal. He made no mistake, slotting home to make the final score 2-0.
