The Editor, Sir:
I have just finished reading your article on the row over schools issuing condoms, and am deeply disturbed by the utterances of Mr. Lynch. Whilst we are all well aware that teenagers are engaging in sexual intercourse to their peril, I cannot support his call for issuing condoms in school. I fail to see the good that can be achieved by issuing condoms in school.
However, what has prompted me to write is his disturbing claim to have in his possession, tapes depicting sexual acts between students/children. Is this not pornography and, specifically, child pornography? He did not state the ages of the participants but I am assuming that they fall within the category of children, seeing that they are not adults. Added to this, in one tape he claims that the girl was obviously forced into having sex.
No condoms
What has Mr. Lynch done to address the contents of the tape? Has he turned them over to the police so that appropriate charges and measures can be applied or has he opted to hold on to the tapes? What I find absolutely incredulous is that the only thing Mr. Lynch found appalling was that no condoms were being used in the tapes. Am I to understand, therefore that had condoms been used, he would not have found the content of the tapes appalling?
I think the authorities should demand that these tapes be handed over so that appropriate criminal charges can be laid. As it is, he is certainly not providing a solution to the problem of underage sex.
I am, etc.,
