Tech:SAVVY - Searching for the right laptop
published: Saturday | January 26, 2008

Payton H. Wilmot, Gleaner Writer

Searching for the right laptop can be quite frustrating. You need to know what you are looking for before you make a decision on what type of laptop you are going to purchase. There are at least two major categories: laptops for work and laptops for play.

What are laptopsfor work?

Those built for work are laptops that get the everyday office work done without the fancy bells and whistles. Meaning of office work:

Managing office documents (Excel, Word, Power Point, etc.);

Surfing the Internet;

Burning documents and files to CDs for future use.

Because of these simple requirements, laptops that are built for work are much cheaper than laptops for play and they are also easier to use. One prime example of a laptop built for work is the HP Pavilion TX 1210us. For those who are always on the go and want advanced communication options plus fast access to their applica-tions and documents, the HP Pavilion TX 1210us provides the ideal convergence of these features with the latest mobile computing technologies. And it's light enough to take anywhere!

What are laptops for play?

These are built with entertainment in mind. They have features such as:

Large LCD (liquid crystal display) screen;

The ability to burn CDs or DVDs;

A good graphics card to play video games;

Great sound output;

A remote control to operate the media centre on the laptop from a distance;

A built-in web camera to surf the Internet;

Audio and video inputs and outputs.

With all the features above, there is no doubt that laptops that are built for play are costly. A good example of a laptop that is built for play is the HP Pavilion DV9000. The HP Pavilion DV9000 has all the features mentioned earlier and more. It is the perfect 'toy' for fun and entertainment!

Conclusion

In the end, the final decision is yours and no else can choose for you. So, make the right choice before you make an expensive mistake. Apart from the two laptops mentioned in this article, there are many others out there to choose from. Just remember what you are purchasing a laptop for - work or play.
