IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD: Letts wins Captain's Bakery pool tourney

ROY LETTS, a former top ranked player, won the Captain's Bakery/Cue Plus Sports Bar open pool tournament last weekend when he defeated Gary Manning 4-2 in the best of seven final at Cue Plus, Port Henderson Plaza.

For his efforts, Letts received $20,000 and a trophy donated by Captain's Bakery (Portmore). This was presented by Dean Baker, proprietor of Cue Plus Sports Bar.

Manning, on the other hand, received $10,000 and a trophy for second, while Ewart Hall who beat Daman Simms for third, received $5,000 and a trophy as well.

All four semi-finalists were 'A' class players from the 35 entries received.

Letts advanced to the final following a hard fought 4-3 semi-final win over Ewart Hall in a match which could have gone either way in the closing stages, preventing Hall from winning his third major tournament in recent months.

Manning, who hails from Mandeville, whipped Simms 4-1 in the other semi-final.

John Mills arenetball champs

After getting by Windward Road 21-15 in the first match in the round robin finals, John Mills swept by New Day 12-6 to capture the top prize in the Kiwanis Club of Kingston netball competition for Corporate Area All-Age and Junior High schools recently.

Presentation of trophies and medals will take place at the Kiwanis Club's luncheon on Tuesday, February 26, along with the All-Age and Junior High football title won by Windward Road.

Dragon in front

Dragon maintained their lead in the Henkel-sponsored Federation Up Pattex skittles competition last Sunday when they defeated House of Peace 7-4 in a home match at Giltress Street, Rollington Town.

As a result of this victory, Dragon enjoy a clear lead in the standings with 158 points from 15 matches - 16 clear of closest rivals Meadowvale who chalked up their fourth consecutive win on Sunday by drubbing Olympic Strikers 9-2 in a home match in Caymanas Gardens.

Results of other matches are: defending champions, Cherry's Strikers defeated Mystix 8-3 in a home match at Bejon's Sports Bar, Hughenden Plaza; Eastern All-Stars clipped Waltham All-Stars 6-5 at Waltham, while Wray and Nephew champions, Rowe's Strikers gained a walkover from Portmore's The Dip.

Legendary cricket servants lauded by PMCL

Three legendary cricket servants - former international cricket umpire Douglas Sang-Hue, Charles Josephs, groundsman at the historic Sabina Park, and Cleveland Davidson, a former Jamaica cricketer - were honoured by the Portmore Metropolitan Cricket League (PMCL) on Wednesday, January 23.

The occasion was the league's annual awards presentation at Ken's Wildflower Restaurant and Lounge on Port Henderson Road in Portmore, St Catherine.

Sang Hue was a well respected Test umpire from the 1960s up until 1981. He has the distinction of umpiring in 13 consecutive Tests in the West Indies - a record that still stands.

Josephs was the groundsman who laboured on the Sabina Park pitch for over 50 years, while Davidson represented Jamaica in the regional competition where he made a double century against the Windward Islands.

All were presented with special plaques by the president of the PMCL, Charles Simpson through WILCO Sports Enterprise Limited, a brand he owns.

Portsmouth, Greater Portmore clash for title

Portsmouth and Greater Portmore will clash tomorrow for the Genius Pharmacy-sponsored Portmore Division Two mid-season title following contrasting results on Sunday. The final is scheduled for the Greater Portmore playing field and match time is 3.00 p.m.

Portsmouth, who had already qualified beat Daytona 1-0 to keep their undefeated record intact, while Greater Portmore went down 0-2 (13) to an improved Christian Pen, but still sneaked into the final ahead of Watson Grove (13) on goal difference. Grove disappointed their fans by drawing 1-1 against Hellshire United. A win would have put them into their first Senior League final.

Benfica get help

The Benfica Football Club in Lime Hall, St. Ann, recently received a big boost, thanks to $250,000 worth of football boots from Joan Brown, a returning resident of the community. She has been sponsoring the club with a similar gesture for the past three years.

The footwear will assist the team participation in the current Captain's Bakery St. Ann F.A. Major League competition and the upcoming all-island Confederation Cup KO competition.

The club, which comprises 30 players, is training hard for both competitions. Mrs Brown sais she was pleased to be giving back something to her community and if the club aspires toward excellence and discipline, more sponsorship will be forthcoming from her company.

Public relations manager of the club, freelance journalist Clive Brown, extended thanks on behalf of Benfica for Mrs Brown's generosity as the club was in dire need of help.

KSAFA Super League

Five matches are scheduled in today's KSAFA Super League football competition, all starting at 3:30 p.m.

The matches on are Constant Spring vs Santos in the feature at Constant Spring, Rockfort vs Police National at Rockfort, Maverley vs Bull Bay at Maverley, Mountain View vs Meadhaven at Excelsior High School and Duhaney Park vs Cavalier at Duhaney Park. JDF will rest for this round.

In the KSAFA Major League, Liguanea will oppose Greenwich at Jamaica College, Swallowfield vs Barbican at Stadium East, Rae Town vs Central Kingston at Breezy Castle, Cooreville vs Olympic Gardens at Cooreville, UTECH vs Real Mona at UTECH and Seaview Gardens vs Brown's Town at Seaview Oval.

Portmore domino

After a one-week break to facilitate the playing of the Pairs KO, the Portmore/St. Catherine domino competition resumes tomorrow with the tenth round of matches starting at 11:30 a.m.

Joint leaders Eradication who suffered their first defeat against ISCF on January 20, will oppose Marliemount in a home match at Gregory Park.

Fort International, co-leaders with Eradication with 41 points from nine matches, take on High Roller in a home match at Passagefort Drive, Ken's Wildflower vs defending champions Hurricane at Ken's Wildflower, Eagle View vs JUTC in a home match at Old Braeton, ISCF vs Lime Tree at Back Road, Correctional Services vs Caribbean Classic at Prison Oval, Old Harbour United vs Seamaster in Old Harbour Bay, Right Stuff vs Village Link in a home match at Cedar Grove Road, Masterpiece vs New Look in Old Harbour and Ackee Pod vs Prozz and Con at Garveymade Sports Club.

Caribbean Classic are second in the standings with 37 points from nine matches, while there is a tie for third. Eagle View and Right Stiff are both on 36 points from nine matches.

Business House domino

The National Association of Domino Bodies, organisers of the Business House competition. has signed a MoU with Games Administration and Innovation to allow them to manage and administrate the Business House competitions in the parishes of St Ann, Trelawny and St Mary.

The meeting between the two bodies was held at the Sports Development Foundation (SDF), Phoenix Avenue, on Thursday evening.

Among those present were the president of the National Association of Domino Bodies Rey Smith; Ludlow Watt, general manager of the SDF, S. Atemu representing Games Administration and Innovation, and vice-president of the National Association of Domino Bodies, Humbert Davis who is also coordinator for the region.

Registration of teams in the Kingston and St. Andrew Business House competition started yesterday and will close on April 4.

The competition is expected to start in May with Seprod , defending Division I champions, and CVM, the Division II champions now promoted to Division I.
