On women and children
published: Thursday | February 7, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

I am writing in regards to a letter from C. Wilson titled 'Gov't should control fertility'. I totally disagree with his views. I think that a woman should have as much children as she feels fit to do.

Back in the days when women did not work only the men did, women were having children as many as 13 and no one wanted to control the birth rate then. All they need to do now is use birth control. Jamaica is not China where a couple is only allowed two children. In India, pregnant women go and have an ultrasonogram to find out the sex of their babies before they give birth. If it's a boy then thy will keep the pregnancy, if it's a girl, then that pregnancy will be terminated. Girls are considered bad luck in India.

Why should a woman after having a child be forced to undergo temporary or permanent tubal ligation or hysterectomy until her situation improves. There is nothing temporary about having your tubes cut or ovaries removed. I am not saying that a woman should be a burden to the Gov't and have many children. The men have a role to play too. The parents of today just need guidance so that they don't make the same mistake over and over again.

I am, etc.,
