Landslide risk maps for PortlandPORT ANTONIO, PORTLAND:
The parish of Portland is the latest recipient of three copies of a landslide susceptibility map and a technical report on landslide risk and zonation.The Mines and Geology Division (MGD) of the Ministry of Energy, Mining and Telecommunications made the presentation in a handover ceremony held recently at the Portland Parish Council.Norman Harris, director of the Research and Mapping Unit at the Mines and Geology Division, said the purpose of the maps is "to assist physical planners, hazard mitigation practitioners and engineers in development planning, disaster mitigation and hazard management. Persons will benefit in terms of knowing the areas in which hazards exist, as well as the levels of hazards to which their communities are prone."- Contributed

The St Thomas Health Department got a shot in the arm on Friday through the philanthropic gesture of Jamaican-born British businessman, Sesford McDonald, who hails from Dalvey, with the presentation of medical supplies valuing approximately £60,000 ($8,235,141).The handover ceremony took place at the Morant Bay Health Centre in Lyssons.In making the presentation, McDonald pointed to the need for strengthening ties of friendship and generosity of spirit.Member of Parliament and Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr Fenton Ferguson, congratulated the donor for his consistency in giving. The St Thomas Technical High School, Maxfield Park Children's Home and the Dalvey Primary School also benefited.- Arthur GreenPortmore hospital still in the worksPORTMORE, ST CATHERINE:
Portmore Mayor Keith Hinds said the building of a 220-room hospital in the municipality is still very much a part of the Sunshine City's development plan.Speaking to The Gleaner, Mayor Hinds said plans are now being considered by the Portmore Municipal Council for the building of what will be a private institution in Southborough, near to Newland in the municipality.According to Hinds, dialogue is now under way to come to a conclusion about the project's start date.Hinds said that despite several setbacks, a meeting with Cayjam Development Company from the Cayman Islands would soon start the ball rolling.Construction is expected to cost over US$200 million ($14 billion).- Rasbert Turner
