THE FOURTH staging of the Camperdown Classic, titled the 'Showcase of Sprinters', will take place today at the Stadium East Field starting at 8:45 a.m.
More than 100 schools, including two from the Cayman Islands, are down to compete at the meet. The top three teams in the boys and girls Class One 4x100m will share a cash prize of $100,000. The winners will collect $60,000, with $25,000 and $15,000 going to the second and third respectively.The 400m for high schools has been dropped from this year's event but there will be an invitational 400m for men and women.Donald Quarrie, the 1976 Olympic 200 metres champion and a past student of Camperdown High, will be honoured at the meet.Camperdown High has produced some of the fastest sprinters to grace the track at Boys' Championships. They include Quarrie, Raymond Stewart, Andrew Smith, Carey Johnson and Remaldo Rose.Many of the athletes who will compete at today's meet will be looking to achieve qualifying times for the GraceKennedy Boys' and Girls' Championships which will be held at the National Stadium from March 12-15.
