NOTE-WORTHY: Cemetery fuss
published: Thursday | February 14, 2008

Cemetery fuss

I am in full agreement with the 23 communities surrounding the controversial Royal Rest Cemetery in Burnt Ground, Hanover, who are seeking to prevent any burial at that location.

What is it that will prevent formaldehyde used to embalm bodies from seeping into the water supply system and cause contamination? The answer is simple. No burial there.

Given the location of that cemetery and the water table involved, there is no doubt in my mind that the health of these residents will be compromised if the cemetery is allowed to operate.

Like so many others, I believe that the EIA report on this one is flawed. It is not too late to reconsider this 'indiscretion' and allow the residents of these communities to lead healthy lives. Why should their deaths be hastened? Is it in order to enhance business for the said cemetery?

Alvin Curling

Re the story on Alvin Curling to address men's conference, 'Leaders arrive for Men on a Mission', it might have been useful to also highlight for the sake of a fuller context of leadership qualities the fact that Curling has also served as Canada's ambassador in the Dominican Republic until 2006.

Bus fares

While it is novel that the cash-strapped JUTC has decided to show the commuters much love during this economic disaster we are now encountering, common sense dictates that if no one is crying over these fares, there is no real purpose to have them changed.

The flip side of all this madness is that on the routes that these buses serve, commuters will have to be coming up with twice the amount of money normally expended.

RGD surprise

The Registrar General's Department has always come in for a lot of flack from customers for giving poor service over the years. However, I feel that credit should be given when it is due.

My sister in the United States wishes me to commend the department for its swift response, surprising to both of us since we had become accustomed to hearing the negatives and were expecting a long wait.

She applied online for copies of her daughter's birth certificate on Wednesday and by Friday of the same week they were knocking at her door with the documents.

Thanks again, RGD, on behalf of my sister and I would encourage persons who complete their applications to ensure at all times that they give correct and complete information to avoid some of the delays they experience. Not to say that this is the reason in all cases whereby persons experience delays.
