Granville improve on their perfect record
published: Thursday | February 14, 2008

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS and runaway Zone A leaders Granville added another chapter to their unbeaten run in the 2007-2008 Captain's Bakery Western Super League on Tuesday afternoon when they thrashed Holland 6-0 on their home turf at Sam Sharpe Teacher's College in St James.

By virtue of their win, the Tracy Reid-coached Granville team, which scored through Damion Reid (three), Christopher Currie, Davian Thelwell and Garth Johnson, has jumped to 21 points - seven clear of second-placed Salt Spring (14), who suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Fogo, who registered only their second win in nine games.

"We have now hit top form so this kind of result is not surprising," said Reid, the lone female coach at this level in national football. "Our aim is to keep our current rich form for the remainder of the competition."

In other Zone A games played on Tuesday, third-placed Frome (13) moved closer to Salt Spring after taking the three points in their 2-0 win over bottom side Sandy Bay (two) while Duanvale and Central played out a 0-0 draw.

Wadadah top group

Over in Zone B, former national champions Wadadah surged to the top of the group when they handed previous leaders Negril a crushing 3-0 defeat in Montego Bay. The defeat for Negril, last season's beaten finalists, was their fourth in nine games.

The win for Wadadah lifted them to 17 points, one more than Negril and Salem, who are now joint second on 15 points each.

Salem, who entered their game against Montpelier tied on points with Wadadah and strongly favoured to win, had to settle for a 2-2 draw as their opponents, now in fourth place on 14 points, turned in a resolute performance and blunted the Salem team's bid to upstage them.

At the completion of the preliminary round, the top two teams in each zone will advance to the semi-final round where the two zone winners will play off with the runner-up team in the opposite zone to decide the two finalists.

The competition's eventual winner will qualify for the 2008-2009 Cash Plus Premier League elimination tournament, pocket a whopping $150,000 winners purse and take home the Captain's Bakery Trophy, the symbol of supremacy in the Jamaica Football Federation's (JFF) Western Confederation.
