published: Thursday | February 14, 2008

Keisha Hill, Staff Reporter

THE MEMORY of legendary track star Herb McKenley continues to resonate at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, and in commemoration of its 60th anniversary, it has renamed its annual torch run in his honour.

The Herb McKenley UWI Run will take place on Saturday and will see the passing of a torch symbolising the University's motto 'Oriens Ex Occidente Lux' - A Light Rising from the West."

The torch-bearers will be joined by hundreds of other participants representing the university's past, present and future.

Scheduled to kick off at the Rex Nettleford Hall at 9:00 a.m., participants will the move along a route which includes Mona Road, Hope Road, Knutsford Boulevard, Arthur Wint Drive, among others before culminating at the National Stadium.

Meet at stadium

At the stadium, participants will join the annual UWI/Gatorade Invitational Track and Field Meet in a short ceremony to celebrate achievements in the university's history.

Elizabeth Buchanan Hind, UWI's executive director - Institutional Advancement Division, speaking at the press launch of the UWI/Gatorade Track and Field Invitational on Tuesday, stated that all security measures and other administrative procedures had been finalised.

"We are excited about the relay. Whatever we do here at the university, it is about the people and we are looking forward to tremendous support from the university family and the com-munity," she said.

Attracted support

The relay has attracted support from a cross section of entities in and around the UWI Mona campus. Corporate entities within the UWI community such as the Bank of Nova Scotia and the National Commercial Bank are set to join the run at various junctures.

Students of primary institutions such as August Town Primary and Hope Valley Experimental will also lend their support. The run will also be joined by representatives of secondary educational institutions such as Papine, Mona and Campion high schools and Jamaica College.

The Herb McKenley UWI Run is the Jamaican-leg of the regional Run UWI Run relay.
