Portmore United's coach, Linval Dixon, has his eyes fixed on the bigger prize and that is to capture the JFF Cash Plus Premier League title.
On Sunday, the team which is leader of the league, took a step closer to realising that dream by whipping Sporting Central Academy of Clarendon 3-1 in an historic game under lights at Ferdie Neita Park, Braeton, St Catherine."It was a good performance from the team. It was the first game under the lights at home. It was one of those high quality performances from the team ... we must give thanks for the victory," Dixon said.Portmore, winners of the first end-of-round final, just missed out on qualification for the second round final but Dixon is not too perturbed by that as he's focusing on the league title."We set our sights on winning the championship and we are on the right track. We just need to keep working and keep doing the things we are doing and hopefully we'll get it right at the end," Dixon said.
Consolation goal
A brace from prolific goal scorer Roen Nelson (10th, 85th) and a rocket from the overlapping Adrian Reid (61st) gave Portmore three points, which elevated them to 43 points, three more than Tivoli (40), who were cut down 0-3 at the Elletson Wakeland field by second to last Village United (22).Sporting Central's consolation goal, netted in the 44th minute, was a cracker as Tennyson Smith picked up a loose ball and fired a powerful shot that ricocheted off the right post and pierced Shawn Sawyers' net, giving the Portmore custodian no chance as it leveled the scores 1-1 on the stroke of half-time.In the 71st minute the visitors got a crushing blow as Linval Lewis was sent off for a second bookable offence, leaving his team vulnerable playing against a quality team as Portmore with 19 minutes left in the game.Sporting's coach Christopher Dawes said: "I thought we gave up possession too easily and when you are playing a quality team like Portmore they will hurt you and they did that today."
