'No to limited state of emergency'
published: Wednesday | February 20, 2008

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

The Guyana government is not considering a limited state of emergency as it contemplates whether to seek assistance from other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, in the wake of the second wave of mass killings in a three-week period.

"No, no, no. This (limited state of emergency) is not an intention. We have had no discussion on such a possibility," Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee told the Caribbean Media Corporation following the massacre in the small mining town of Bartica that left 13 people dead on Sunday.

Earlier, Trinidad and Tobago's National Security Minister Martin Joseph, who is also chair of the CARICOM Ministers of National Security and Law Enforcement, said he would hold talks with Rohee "to determine what assistance, if any, may be needed at this time".
