Young Kiwis hammer Malaysia
published: Friday | February 22, 2008

(AP):

LEFT-ARM seamer Trent Boult took seven wickets as New Zealand hammered hosts Malaysia by eight wickets with 38 overs to spare yesterday, booking a place in the quarter-finals of the Under-19 World Cup.

Meanwhile, South Africa defeated Papua New Guinea by seven wickets to make up for their prior loss to India, while Nepal sneaked past Namibia by three runs and Bermuda defeated Ireland by 20 runs.

The 18-year-old Boult's haul of 7-20 was the second best in the history of the tournament, only one run off the record figures of 7-19 set by Ben Mendis of Sri Lanka against Zimbabwe in 2002.

Tim Southee, another Kiwi seamer, took the remaining three wickets in the Group A match to help dismiss Malaysia for a paltry 47. NZ reached the target of 48 in the 12th over to wrap up the match in just two hours.

In Group B, South Africa captain Wayne Parnell took 3-19 and Jonathan Vandiar snapped up 4-27 to bowl PNG out for 125. In reply Pieter Malan made 56 as South Africa reached the target in the 16th over.

South Africa have two wins from three group matches, but their place in the quarter-finals is not confirmed yet, pending the India-West Indies match today.

A West Indies win will result in a three-way tie and the two teams with the best net run-rates will advance to the next round.
