Education Minister Andrew Holness has received the report he requested on the multibillion-dollar Education Transformation programme. The report is expected to detail how and on what the initial $5 billion, which was injected into the programme to kick-start the transformation process, was spent.
The report reached Holness' desk on Thursday and he told The Gleaner that he planned to peruse the document before taking it to Cabinet. Reports are that this report is necessary if the programme is to receive additional funding.
In an earlier interview, the minister also said he planned to take the report to Parliament.
No negative notions
Holness told The Gleaner yesterday that he had no "preconceived negative notions" about the transformation programme, "... and, indeed Transformation has achieved some significant results in the education system, particularly with infrastructure".
Earlier this week, Frank Weeple, executive director of the Education Transformation Unit in the Ministry of Education, said that $4.7 billion of the initial allotment had been spent so far. He said that he was confident that the country had received value for money. He told The Gleaner that $4.1 billion, or 87 per cent of the total expenditure to date, had been spent on infrastructure development.
