Cops and cash
I am a British citizen, I visit Jamaica frequently, and I have witnessed police officers taking money on two occasions. My friend who is a Rastaman was stopped twice by police on two different days. Both times, the officers took money off him for no real reason.
I think that as I am white and obviously a tourist, they thought there was a certainty they would get some cash. I was really cross both times, but was told it was common practice, and that there wasn't anything that could be done about it. The officers no doubt pocket the money, or as my friend said it would go to a girlfriend or to feed dem pickney. Not a good impression to give a visitor to your country.

Transport centre solution
Just to commend the Jamaica Urban Transit Company and its efforts to make travelling in and around Kingston more acceptable.
On the matter of students loitering and vandalising the toilets and other facilities at the transport centre, I suggest that the main entry to the toilets should be in full view of the main waiting area and, except for severely disabled persons, there should be a charge and time limit for use, after which the doors will close automatically and need to be opened by authorised members of staff.
These conditions will cause students, especially, to reconsider any negative behaviour when travelling via the transport centre

Big mistake
I am very disturbed by the Commissioner of Police Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin's plan to take away the M16 from the front-line police. In a country where police are losing their lives so often I think, sir, what you are doing is unacceptable.
You are giving the police officers of this wonderful country basket to carry water.
The cocaine producers in Colombia must be laughing at our security system. I hope, sir, you will realise that you are making a big mistake because a police officer's life is a terrible thing to waste.

Reckless taxis
I am so upset about the taxi driver whom the police warned on several occasions about his poor driving habits. Why, oh why, did they not take away his licence?
All of this could have been avoided if they warned him more than one time. If someone is warned more than twice about poor driving habits, the third time he or she should have his or her licence taken away for good.
