University Singers 2nd annual Easter concert
published: Monday | March 17, 2008

University Singers - Contributed

The University Singers of the University of the West Indies, Mona, will present its second annual Easter Sunday concert 'This Joyful Eastertide - a Programme of Sacred Vocal Music'.

The programme will begin at 5:00 p.m. at the University Chapel, University of the West Indies, Mona, and will again feature past and present soloists of the University Singers, presentingpopular sacred solos and Negro spirituals. The Easter Sunday concert is being established as an annual event, showcasing the solo talent of the accomplished group.

Past singers

The evening will feature past singers Carl Bliss - tenor, and Nickette Morgan - contralto. Other soloists include sopranos Stacy Adams, Tina Mowatt, Renee Thompson, Althea Sinclair, Rochelle Brooks and Stephany Blair; contraltos Jhana Williams and Monique Sloley; tenors Charles Moore, Roy Thompson and Warren Thompson and basses Domnick Frazer, Franklin Halliburton and Murphey Osbourne.

Sacred music from traditional composers, including Handel, Gounod, Verdi and Stainer, and contemporary composers such as Mack Wilberg and Andrew Lloyd Webber, among many others, will feature in the concert.

This is a year full of festivities as the University of the West Indies celebrates its 60th anniversary, and the University Singers celebrate its 15th. The year will see home-coming events for both the university and the choir as alumni and past singers gather on the campus from all across the world. The choir launched its celebrations in December 2007 with the launch of a recording of Christmas music - Season of Light and Mango Time: Folk Songs of Jamaica, a book by Musical Director Noel Dexter and past singer Godfrey Taylor.

The evening plans to be a family occasion of sacred soul-stirring music, most fitting for the holy Easter season. Tickets are on sale at the Music Mart, Monarch Pharmacy, and the office of the University Singers.
