Rottweilers on the prowl
published: Tuesday | April 1, 2008

The Editor, Sir:

There is a pack of Rottweilers patrolling the political highways and byways of Jamaica. As you say "who dat?" they zero in for the throat, fangs bared to rip to shreds any pronouncements, any suggestions, any suspicious moves to halt the slide of our beleagured nation state into total depravity.

Any society needs its critics for sure, but the current howling of the pack begs the question: Where had they been kennelled for the past how many years? With the dirty political campaign being played out in Washington and all over the Union, Jamaican journalists and political pundits are seeing all the foibles and failures of the system there, the myopia and shameful bias of the journalism fraternity and the ruthlessness that reigns in the halls of power.

Yet, in our own 2.6 million little corner, many of the watchmen of our society had maintained an awful silence while the plunder of Jamaica's treasures ran rife. Were they busy devouring steaks?

The present administration deserves to be kept on its toes. In retreat for 18 years, we expected them to hit the ground running, since they occupied themselves with a monthly tally of the loot that was rapidly disappearing from the national coffers.

Of course, they should have seen this coming, even with the unexpected economic wind shifts. Nobody is going to tolerate another ramshackle administration, bent on furthering the impoverishment of the nation. So we want more action than we need excuses.

But who let the Rottweilers out?

I am, etc.,
