There is still no word as to when the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC) will resume the towing of illegally parked vehicles to its impound facilities.
"We are still in the process of investigation; we have not completed that as yet and I am not prepared to make any further comment on the issue until that is done," Kingston Mayor Desmond McKenzie said yesterday, when contacted by The Gleaner.
Service suspended
The service was suspended for an initial period of two weeks for a review of the policy regarding the towing of vehicles to be conducted. Prior to this, the mayor had placed a ban on motor vehicles taken in by the police. This was communicated to Police Commissioner, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin.
The decision followed the recent challenge by a motorist whose vehicle was towed and transported from Morant Bay, St Thomas for safekeeping at the pound operated by the KSAC on Barry Street, downtown Kingston. For its services, the wrecker company slapped one owner with a fee of $26,900, while another driver was hit with a $30,000 fee.
Allegations of corruption have dogged the police and wrecker operators over the years, The Gleaner recently published 'Wrecker Racket', which took an in-depth look into the operations of the service in Jamaica, as well as the role of the police, local authorities and the Transport Authority.
