issue:Rude and insensitive
published: Saturday | April 5, 2008

It has become a trend to have a social page in both our newspapers. Social events are spread in Hollywood style. How very materialistic and superficial this elitist effort! While the country suffers and reels under the grips of crime the socialites dance and wine!

One could allow this to be done, however inappropriate, but what is disgustingly rude is the repeated throwing of darts at the 'first lady' of the land. At the State Opening of Parliament, Mrs Golding wore an attractive outfit. She looked quite distinguished and beautiful, but the writer described her outfit as being made out of upholstery material and totally dowdy.

How rude and insensitive! This display of a total lack of respect shows without the shadow of a doubt the depth of the social prejudices that beset our society. The designer clothes and the expensive blings that are worn are the measures by which we value each other.

This is the country's 'First Lady' a strong woman in her own right. She has stood by her family, ran a business and held her own over the years prior to this position. I am sure that a Coco Chanel, a Christian Dior would not add an iota of worth to her value as a woman. The author of these comments shows how spiritually bankrupt one can get. We are still enslaved, living under the crippling bondage of materialistic and mundane values. Beauty does not come from one's outfits, but springs from within.
