The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says it will be reintroducing its express service come Monday. The bus service was temporarily discontinued in February as the cash-strapped company sought to refurbish several of its regular buses, which were out of service.
Lenworth Simms, marketing and sales manager at the JUTC, said during the six-week period, the company was able to refurbish 30 regular buses. The availability of these buses, he said, would enable the JUTC to return the 30 express buses to the express routes without causing any disruption to the overall service.
smaller fleet
The JUTC currently has a fleet of approximately 350. This is much smaller than the original 500 buses back in 1999. Simms said the company was working to repair another 120 vehicles that would be reintroduced at a rate of 15 buses per month.
He said there were also some 250 buses which were in a state of disrepair.
"At some point, those buses will have to be written off as we may not be able to repair them," said Simms.
