published: Saturday | April 5, 2008

The semi-finalist in the West Portland Under-19 20/20 cricket competition have been decided. Fourth Generation, Swift River, West Port and Balcares are the final four teams.

In tomorrow's semi-final matches, both to be played to Skibo Oval, Fourth Generation take on Swift River at 11:00, while West Port tackle Balcares at 2:00 p.m.

In last weekend's final round of matches, Fourth Generation topped the standings with 10 points, this after they shared the points with Orange Bay in a rained-out match.

West Port finished second with nine points while Swift River (eight), Balcares (seven), Orange Bay (seven), Spring Hill (two) and Black Hill (one) filled out the rest of the table.

Western St Mary netball rally

The Island Sport Trust has announced the staging a Western St Mary netball rally set for April 13 at James Bond Beach.

Depending upon the number of teams that register, the competition will either be a knockout or double-elimination format.

The rally is open to players of all ages. Also, since the rally will be at James Bond Beach, games will be played on a grass court.

The Sport Trust is currently scouring Western St Mary to determine just exactly how many teams are left and who might be interested in playing.

Church, community and business teams are welcome and interested persons can call the Sport Trust at 975-3393 or 470-8139.

Seven-a-side football

The Island Sports Trust has launched a seven-a-side football league which will start later this month.

Over the years, the Sport Trust has organised an Under-19 football competition during the months of January to April. In its original form, it was designed to provide a competitive outlet for young men in the communities in and around Oracabessa who didn't have a chance to play football at the Division One or Two level.

The seven-a-side league is designed to renew the community-based element of Oracabessa football while at the same time, providing a healthy environment in which winning is not the primary goal.

The league will be open to players of all ages. Additionally, each team must register at least two females and have at least one female on the field at all times.

Teams choosing to participate will receive complimentary entry into James Bond Beach on match days for their registered players and three members of the team's staff.

Portsmouth, Watson Grove battle

Portsmouth take on arch-rivals Watson Grove in the final of the Colin Fagan-sponsored Portmore Division Two knockout football league at the Ferdie Neita Park tomorrow.

Mid-season final champions Portsmouth will start favourites boasting two victories over their Gregory Park division opponents. The first meeting saw Portsmouth winning 2-0 in the preliminaries of the league. The second victory was a 3-0 penalty shoot-out triumph last Sunday at the Greater Portmore playing field after both teams were locked 2-2 on aggregate after regulation and extra time.

Portsmouth are also in the league final. Watson Grove will be burning for revenge, as they didn't like how their team was eliminated from league play, coming into the second leg well confident with a 1-0 lead.

MultiCare competitions

Preparations for the MultiCare Foundation Inter-Schools basketball and football competitions set for Wednesday and Thursday are currently being finalised in the 31 MultiCare-assisted schools.

Students from each of the participating schools are training hard in an all-out effort to secure the gold medal for their schools.

Both competitions, being held at the MultiCare sports complex - Breezy Castle Centre, will see more than 600 boys and girls competing with the 10-12 age group on Wednesday, and the 13-15 and 16-18 groups in action on Thursday.

In the 10-12 age group, DuPont Primary School are among three schools hoping to retain their 2007 supremacy in the basketball competition, while Denham Town High School, winners of the 13-15 age group, and Haile Selassie High School, winners of the 16-18 age group, are also hoping to retain their crowns.

Primary Mini Basketball League

Thirteen teams are down to compete in the fourth INSPORTS/JBA St Catherine Primary Mini Basketball League on Wednesday.

Defending champions Waterford Primary have withdrawn from the competition. Waterford's title came in 2006. There was no competition last year.

St John's Primary, winners in 2004 and 2005, are the favourites for this year's title and gave their opponents fair warning by copping the one-day rally at Edgewater Community Centre, beating Greater Portmore 4-3 in that final.

The competition will be played on Tuesdays and Wednesday at the Spanish Town Police Station Court and Edgewater Community Centre. The semi-finals and the final are scheduled for May 1 at the Edgewater Community Centre.

Kissendal wins Mystix tourney

Sunil 'Termite' Kissendal bounced back to his brilliant best last weekend to win the Mystix 8-Ball Pool tournament (Handicap) at 78 3/4 Hagley Park Road, whipping the in-form Ewart Hall 4-0 in the best-of-seven final. For his efforts, Kissendal copped the $30,000 first prize and a trophy donated by Mystix Sports Bar, while Hall picked up $15,000 for second. En route to the final, Kissendal disposed of André Meeks 4-1, Richie Gold 4-0 in the quarter-finals and came from two games down to beat the highly-regarded Calhoun Melville 4-3 in the semi-finals. Hall, who has won the past three major tournaments and was on a roll prior to this competition, beat Ralph 'Jimmy' Brown from Big Corner MoBay 4-1 and Lincoln 'Mandrake' Clarke 4-1, among others, to reach the final. Kissendal, however, was on top of his game in the final which turned out to be a one-sided affair. In the play-off for third, Chelsea's Melville beat Brown to secure $10,000 with Brown picking up $5,000 for fourth in a field of more than 30. Kissendal, who plays for both Mystix and Portmore's Cue Plus, said he has been invited to a tournament in Puerto Rico on April 18 and 19 and is looking forward to making the trip.
