The University of West Indies' (UWI) Tanice Barnett and University of Technology's (UTech) Odean Richards accounted for two records on yesterday's opening day of the Inter-Collegiate Track & Field Championships at G.C. Foster College.

Barnett, an Olympic hopeful, took the women's 1500m final in 4:30.45 seconds to beat the old mark, 4:52.06, of former G.C. Foster College runner, Paula Whitemore. Barnett left her team- mate Mellesha Thomas (4:42.94) in her wake and G.C. Foster's Vanessa Boyd (4:43.86), while two-time World Junior 200m silver medallist, Anneisha McLaughlin, surprised many with an appearance in the event. McLaughlin was eighth in 6:02.52.

Richards' record came in the men's shot put. He threw 16.76m to break the old mark of 16.47m previously held by Jason Morgan of UTech.

400m hurdles title

G.C. Foster's Rosemarie White (59.94) beat UTech's Treshana McGowan (62.68) for the women's 400m hurdles title, while UTech's Roxroy Cato (52.75) took the men's event ahead of G.C. Foster's Anthony Whyte (53.04).

McGowan (14.61) and Yushanni Durant (14.81) had earlier given UTech a one-two in the women's 100m hurdles. G.C. Foster's pair of Edward Stewart (14.33) and Paul Montague (15.15) also finished one-two in the men's 110m hurdles.

Durant took the women's long jump with a leap of 5.88m while Sunil Anderson (1.95m), also of UTech, won the men's high jump.

Meanwhile, Carifta Games 400m bronze medallist, Alecia Cutenar, ran an impressive 11.39 seconds to lead the qualifiers going into the women's 100m final that will be run today. Schillonie Calvert won her heat in 11.42.

World Championships silver medallist Anastasia LeRoy (24.14) leads the qualifiers going into today's 200m final.

After 13 finals, UTech lead both sections. In the female division UTech (72 points) lead G.C. Foster (61) and UWI (41), while their men's team has so far accumulated 77 points to lead G.C. Foster (57) and Portmore Community College (25).

Twenty-one finals will be contested today.
