Surprise recall for Pollard

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, (CMC):

Trinidadian batsman Kieron Pollard has been recalled to the West Indies one-day set-up, in a 16-man squad announced yesterday by selectors.

The 20-year old Pollard played his only match for the Windies a year ago - during last year's Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean - but had been overlooked ever since.

Pollard, along with wicketkeeper/ batsman Patrick Browne, batsman Runako Morton and all-rounder Darren Sammy, are the four players called up to the squad ahead of the first One-Day International starting here on Thursday.

Trinidadian off-spinner Amit Jaggernauth is the only casualty from the Test squad.

The vote of confidence in the aggressive, right-handed Pollard comes after a moderate season for the player in domestic cricket. He has managed just 276 runs from nine innings in the Carib Beer Series, without a century to his name.

Browne, meanwhile, an attacking batsman who was used during the one-day series in South Africa where he played his only three ODIs to date, has again found favour with selectors.

His form, however, has been indifferent with just 49 runs to show from his five innings in the Carib Beer tournament, since returning from South Africa.

Morton, dropped from the Test side for the current Sri Lanka tour, has made several emphatic statements in the domestic four-day tournament.

He amassed 414 runs, in just three matches with two centuries, to keep his name high on the selectors' short list.

Sammy, who like Morton, also failed to reclaim his Test place for the Sri Lanka series, has been given another run in the shorter version of the game.

The first Digicel ODI will be played at the Queen's Park Oval starting Thursday, with the second encounter scheduled for the same venue on Saturday.

SQUAD: Chris Gayle (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Sulieman Benn, Patrick Browne, Dwayne Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Fidel Edwards, Runako Morton, Keiron Pollard, Daren Powell, Denesh Ramdin, Darren Sammy, Marlon Samuels, Devon Smith, Jerome Taylor.
