There has been much said of homophobia and the Jamaican male. It has been internationally said that we are the most homophobic society in the world. This is a misnomer and pure propaganda. We, as a people, are not afraid of homosexuals. On the contrary, they live among us, they work along side us. As people, they are some of the nicest you will find, well mannered and socially aware with a high regard for humanity. However, the act of lying with the same sex is one that our society, which is deeply spiritual and observes the teachings of the Bible, cannot accept. Given that though, we still remain tolerant. We as a society still say that what happens behind closed doors is none of our business.
As a society, we have always practised 'live and let live' but we are now being coerced with economic sanctions to accept a way of life and while we tolerate it we will never accept it and those who practise the lifestyle in Jamaica know this very well.
Live and let live, what a man does behind closed doors is his business not mine. He will have to answer to his Maker just like adulterers and fornicators, but don't ask me to embrace it. That is a violation of my rights and that of the majority of Jamaicans.
