In Sherry South's letter, The Gleaner, April 8, 2008, reference was made to Dr Robert Kemper's article on the registration of the population for police control, and she proposed the same for Jamaica.
What she did not make clear was that this was under Nazi Germany and has long been disbanded. It was easy to find and eliminate Jews because of this registration.
It has been revoked to the extent that Germans used to have difficulties getting credit cards since the keeping of registers is now very restricted.

Unpaid student
I am a participant in the Jamaica Values and Attitudes Programme (Jamvat) writing to express my deep dissatisfaction with the National Youth Service (NYS).
This as, after completing the required 200 hours of work, my school fee is yet to be paid and I still have not received my stipend. This situation is particularly alarming, since exams begin in less than two weeks.
The school term is drawing to a close and I still have not received my stipend, which was expected to be of some assistance for the school term.
I have contacted the NYS and they have indicated that the Ministry of Education is supposed to pay the money to the institution.
I have paid my dues and as such, my school fees need to be paid in order for me to sit my exams. I formed an agreement with the NYS that stipulated that upon completion of the 200 hours of service, they would pay 30 per cent of my school fee and give me a stipend. There is just about one month and a week remaining in the school year and the NYS has not fulfilled their end of the bargain.

Budget speech
I listened with disappointment and frustration as the Most Honourable Minister of Finance delivered a disappointing but eloquently presented Budget speech.
We need to get past the constant going back and forth in the 'they did, we did, and they didn't and we did' match that has characterised the current administration's style of governance.
This childish tendency was reflected in the Budget speech. We listened in vain to hear about well-needed jobs and tax cuts and measures to bring food costs to a level where the common man and woman can 'eat a food' without prostituting him/herself formally or informally.
