Tivoli's Navion Boyd
A disappointed Harbour View coach, Lenworth Hyde, admitted that Tivoli Gardens may just have wanted it more, as the west Kingston team squeezed past the weary Stars of the East to grab the last semi-final spot in the COK Champions Cup, following a 1-0 win at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex on Thursday night.
"They played like they wanted it a bit more than us and that is what made the difference," Hyde said.
"Right now, we are struggling with some injuries and some of the players are really tired; I tried to give some of them a rest today," he added.
came close to scoring
With both teams squandering numerous first-half opportunities, Tivoli Gardens took the lead in the 68th minute, courtesy of a well-placed header by striker Navion Boyd.
However, the better of the chances in that half had gone to Harbour View. As early as the 10th minute, striker Kavin Bryan broke into the area before serving the ball to the feet of strike partner Rafiek Thomas. With most of the target still in sight, Thomas could only find the gloves of advancing Tivoli 'keeper Leon Gordon.
Bryan would find himself in a similar situation in the 28th minute with almost identical results. .
It was a sharper Tivoli team who answered the whistle for the second half.
Jermaine Taylor, another substitute, did manage to put the ball into the goal for a second time for the West Kingston team in the 74th minute, but the goal was called off for offside.
Tivoli manager Brian Rose was pleased with his team's performance and believed they deserved a spot in the last four.
"We are very happy with the result and I think that we have been playing well and we worked hard for a place in the semi-finals," he said.
"We fell out of the Jackie Bell competition early so we really wanted to make an impression in this competition," he added.
Tivoli joined Granville, Village and Waterhouse in the semi-finals. The respective match-ups will be settled after a draw next week.
