Dear Counsellor,
I am leaving college in a month or two. I am not sure of a career path to take. I have sent out many job applications and am hoping that I will get a job.

Dear Carol,
Job hunting can be challenging even for the experienced worker. If you haven't worked before, the workplace will be a brave new world. Many companies want people with experience, but are willing to take someone who is enthusiastic, eager and interested.
The working community is full of variety. As a newcomer, you'll probably apply for jobs that suit your college experience. When you're young, you tend not to be aware of the variety of jobs available.
Don't put on blinkers and narrow your range to a few select areas. Sometimes you have to get experience in related fields before you land a job in your area of choice.
Certain jobs lend themselves to variety, while others are limited. Entry-level jobs are usually available but you may have to send many applications before you get a job. I know many individuals who've worked in various areas and gained experience that has allowed them to choose an appropriate postgraduate degree.
As an employee, you need to be punctual, polite, have a pleasant personality and be willing to work hard. It is good to be flexible and cooperative. You need to keep up to date with the developments in your area of interest. Therefore, you will be working, but keeping your eye on your area of interest. You need to plan, budget and save from day one. Time passes by rather quickly and before you realise it, five years have passed. Set yourself goals on a timeline and work towards them.
If you want to do further studies, budget for it. When you are working, you will gather information that will help you make appropriate decisions.
